Overview:

Not all treks can be done in the winter months of December to March due to the presence of excessive snow. There are very few winter treks in the Himalayas that are as adventurous and stunning as Brahmatal. The amount of snow at the Brahmatal trek teases every trekker to take up the challenge. Virgin forests, unspoiled Lakes with impressive views of the Himalayas, Brahmatal Trek makes for one of the best winter treks in the Himalayas.

The frozen lake with the mighty Himalayan peaks overlooking it, is a treat to the shutterbugs. The trekkers are awed by the views of the several Himalayan Peaks of 7000 meters height. Nowhere else in our country you’ll see these Himalayan Peaks from such close quarters. Just to witness this magic, one must do Brahmatal trek between December and March.




Itinerary:

Day 1: Haridwar / Kathgodam to Lohajung (215 km/9 hours)

Begin your long uphill drive to Lohajung from Kathgodam. Lohajung is the base camp for the Brahmatal trek. You’ll drive along beautiful mountain roads and forests of Uttarakhand. The journey will take you through the famous hill stations of Bhimtal, Almora, Kausani, and Gwaldam. On a clear day, you will get glimpses of the Garhwal Himalayas.

According to the legends, Goddess Parvati had a war (Jung) with the demon Lohasur at Lohajung. Hence, Lohajung gets its name ‘War with Lohasur.’ Arrive Lohajung at evening. Overnight stay at Hotel or Guest House.


Day 2: Lohajung to Bekaltal (6 km/4-5 hours)

After early morning breakfast, trek to the first campsite Bekaltal Lake. After a short trek, you’ll cross Mundoli Village and Budla which are usually lined with Rhododendron trees. Reach Begum, a beautiful location that offers splendid views of Navali Bugyal. After 2 hours, you’ll reach the beautiful lake of Bekaltal.

The first campsite is Bekaltal which is amidst thick oak forests. In winter, it is frozen, while in summer it remains peacefully beautiful. You’ll love camping beside the frozen lake of Bekaltal. Enjoy the bonfire and delicious dinner at Bekaltal campsite at Camp or Tent.


Day 3: Bekaltal to Brahmatal (7 km/ 3-4 hours)

Start your day early with warm-up exercises followed by the delicious breakfast. Today, you'll have trek 7 km or 3 hours to scale heights up to 10,440 ft metres till Brahmatal. The trail starts out of the Bekaltal campsite and climbs steeply into the Oak and Rhododendron forest. After an hour of ascent, the trail opens out to a beautiful meadow. The gentle walk on the ascending meadow brings you to the highest point of the day at 11,500 ft. From here, it is a very gradual descent to Brahmatal.

You will see the Valleys around Almora and Nainital and the splendor of the mighty Himalayas, Mt.Trishul, and Nandaghunti. 

Your second campsite is a Brahmatal campsite near frozen Brahmatal Lake. You’ll find yourself around the white undulating snowfields of Brahmatal. Enjoy the bonfire and delicious dinner at Brahmatal campsite at Camp or Tent.


Day 4: Brahmatal to Brahmatal Top and Back

Today will be the fascinating day of the entire trek of Brahmatal. After early morning breakfast,  start your trek to Brahmatal Top. As you reach the Brahmatal summit, an entire panorama of Himalayan mountains opens in front of you. You’ll see mighty Himalayan ranges in every direction. Himalayan Peaks of 7,000 meters are common.

Himalayan peaks of Chaukhambha, Mana, Nilgiri, Neelkanth, Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, Maitoli and mountains stretching all the way to the Panchachuli range. Spent some quality time at Brahmatal Top and return back to the Brahmatal campsite. Overnight stay at Camp or Tent.



Day 5: Brahmatal to Lohajung(9 km/ 6-7 hours)

After an early morning breakfast, descend back to Lohajung. It generally takes about 7 hours of trek to reach Lohajung. Follow the same route till Khabekhal, and get down directly to Lohajung via. Daldum.

The trail to Daldum passes through forests. Daldum is a beautiful location surrounded by trees. After 30 minutes, you’ll reach Malling, which is outside the forest area. After walking further for an hour, you’ll reach Burali and finally back to Lohajung. Enjoy the delicious dinner and overnight stay at Hotel or Guest House.


Day 6: Lohajung to Haldwani / Kathgodam(215 km/9 hours)

After early morning breakfast, drive back to Haldwani / Kathgodam. En route, you can visit Kausani - The Mini Switzerland of India. You'll probably reach by 6 pm at evening.
